I found this recipe on one of the coupon blogs (Hip2Save) I follow, and I couldn't wait to try it out. Have you ever looked at the ingredients on the taco seasoning packet? You would be shocked! There are crazy things in it, not to mention MSG! I have noticed I get bad migraines when I eat MSG, so to see this on the back of the package, was bothersome to me.
Ever since Parker was born, I have been obsessed with reading labels. I wanted to make sure what he was eating and I was feeding him were healthy and not loaded with a bunch of chemicals and unnecessary ingredients. That's also why I chose to make all of his baby food. With autism at high levels and no known reasons for it, and diabetes, obesity, cancer and everything else on the rise in young kids, it just makes sense for me to do my part and make sure that what I feed Parker and our family is nutritious. Yes, we may have Chick Fil A once a week, but that doesn't count. After all, they fry their foods in peanut oil! hahaha
Anyway, I made tacos last night, and other than being a little too spicy for Parker, they were pretty darn good. I rinsed his meat after I was done, and it was still well seasoned, but no longer hot. I used 3 tbs per pound of meat and mixed it with 3/4c of water after I browned and drained the ground beef. However, I think 2-2.5 tbs of this mix would have been sufficient. Billy likes a lot of seasoning, so I am sure it was perfect for him, but it was a little too much for me. Here is the recipe:
Ingredients:
4 tablespoons chili powder
1 teaspoon garlic powder
1 teaspoon onion powder
1 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes (more or less depending on how spicy you like it--I used cayenne pepper)
1 teaspoon dried oregano
1 tablespoon paprika
3 tablespoon ground cumin
1 tablespoon salt
1 tablespoon black pepper
4 tablespoons chili powder
1 teaspoon garlic powder
1 teaspoon onion powder
1 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes (more or less depending on how spicy you like it--I used cayenne pepper)
1 teaspoon dried oregano
1 tablespoon paprika
3 tablespoon ground cumin
1 tablespoon salt
1 tablespoon black pepper
In a bowl mix everything together and store in an airtight container.
Enjoy!!
